What is Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery
Business Continuity (BC) is the practice of identifying key systems and implementing tools or processes to keep them running during and even after a disaster.  Typical continuity tools are items such as RAID cards protecting server storage, dual power supplies, uninterruptible power supplies, failover devices for redundant Internet connections, network load balancing, clustering, network monitoring and others.

Disaster Recovery (DR) is concerned with returning your systems to normal operations after some sort of interruption.  Typical recovery tools include items such as tape and disk backups, data replication to local and remote sites, server replication to local and remote sites and others.

Some people think their organization is too small to think about DR or BC.  No organization has an unlimited technology budget.  The best way to get started is to conduct a Business Impact Assessment to understand which of your technology assets are critical to operations and what the impact will be IF you were down for specific periods of time.  This concept is also know as your Recovery Time Objective (RTO).
